It was a given that Zombieland: Double Tap was going to be a very funny film, considering that the original’s quartet of stellar actors were returning to reprise their roles of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock. But something that I have to say I have seen very little of is that Double Tap, is actually probably a better film than the original Zombieland.
It all comes down to the structure of the film. Zombieland was always meant to be a TV show, so the first film was a little bit like a sketch show with zombies. The plot was thin and only really served to loosely connect great jokes or gory action scenes. Double Tap however, whilst still keeping the fast paced, not in one place too long, style of storytelling; it plays out much more like a film with the characters driving the plot rather than just us witnessing them do stupid shit in a zombie apocalypse.
That being said, if you didn’t like the first film you probably won’t like this one. Feels like it was ripped straight out of 2009 and that’s not a bad thing. Despite a complete saturation of the zombie genre in the decade since the first Zombieland, Double Tap remains refreshing and original.
Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are a perfect comedy double act and it was fantastic to seem them back as Tallahassee and Columbus respectively. Though I do kind of hope that Zombieland is left alone now. Or at least for a long time again.
Also stick around for the mid credits sequence, if Woody Harrelson singing Elvis over the credits wasn’t enough to make you stay, seeing how the outbreak began will have you belly laughing as you leave the theatre; the sign of a great comedy film.
