I was one of those kids in school that cared way too much about their grades and worrying too much about getting caught doing things I shouldn't be doing. That is why Booskmart resonated with me so heavily and why I feel like it is one of the best teen comedy films in years.
Best friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) are about to start their last day of high school, proud of the fact that they kept their heads down and worked their butts off to get into great colleges. So proud in fact that Molly is prepared to put others down for it. That's when they realise that even though everyone else spent the year partying and fooling around in class, they too got into great colleges. Determined to not throw away their entire high school experience, Amy & Molly plan to attend a massive end of high school party at a classmates house and show everyone just how fun they really can be...as you can probably tell, it doesn't quite go to plan.
Cutting straight to the chase, Kaitlyn Dever is amazing in this film and really shows how she is one of the great up and coming stars in Hollywood. Feldstein too has a great performance, though Molly as a character can be a little hard to stomach. She is arrogant, loud, mean, and generally a pretty crappy friend to Amy. This does play into her character arc of the course of the film, but I feel like she didn't learn enough about how much she hurts people over the course of the film for her to have the happy ending she gets. The supporting cast are a mix of high school stereotypes that whilst having more depth than your average teen movie, they still aren't fully fleshed out enough to really get excited about.
The film has a great soundtrack though and is really well paced & shot. It's a fun comedy film with plenty of great jokes. Although its definitely aimed at an older Gen Z crowd, I'm sure people who can at least remember what school was like will have a really fun time with Booksmart. I also can't wait to see Kaitlyn Dever progress from here, she really is one to watch.
