The issue of inequality is a battle that rages on today as much as it did 50 years ago and longer still. On the Basis of Sex follows the early years of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her pivotal successes in US Supreme Court to start changing laws that discriminated on gender roles and societal norms.
Though at times the film certainly drags its feet, it portrays Ginsberg as a flawed warrior fighting a war that seemed like it could never be won in a way that certainly keeps you engaged throughout thanks to Felicity Jones’ emotional yet determined portrayal of the figure.
The ending does seem as though it lacks resolution, but perhaps that’s because the battle is still far from over; either way On the Basis of Sex does not feel like it will be a film that will stand out from the crowd. An important subject that perhaps needed a slightly more nuanced approach.
