Gravity is perhaps my favourite film of 2013. It's a simple premise, two astronauts get stranded on the edge of Earth's orbit and must use the Earth's rotation to get to a space station in hopes of finding a shuttle to return to Earth. It's a film that is probably not a great idea to watch if you're easily panicked or have anxiety issues as its designed to make you feel panicked and uncomfortable for its entire runtime. Whilst not an explosive action film, the terror of being lost in space is so effectively communicated by director Alfonso Cuaron that it is an exhausting watch.
The special effects are incredible with almost the entire film having been filmed in front of a green screen. Sandra Bullock too provides perhaps the best performance of her career. These two combined with some gorgeous cinematography (including some amazing long takes, one of which is over 10 minutes in length) and an incredible score composed by Steven Price provide a simply unmissable experience. If you do get the opportunity to watch this at a cinema you simply must, the bigger the screen the better and it's also one of the few films to use 3D really well. I had the opportunity to watch the film at London's BFI IMAX in 3D and it's an experience I will never forget.
Gravity may be light on story, and bear a brief running time of 91 minutes, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another film as consistently thrilling, anxiety inducing and dazzlingly gorgeous. Gravity is an uncomfortable edge of your seat thrill ride that shouldn’t be missed.
