The superhero movie has never been more popular with Avengers: Endgame just shy of becoming the highest grossing film of all time, so it’s about time that the genre is given a refreshing new spin every now and again. Enter Brightburn, a super villain origin horror film. Not words I thought I would be typing a few years ago.
Brandon Breyer is a 12 year old boy who begins to discover that he isn’t exactly human, and that he can do things that nobody else can. Learning that his life is a lie, he responds in kind by torturing those who are cruel to him and establishing his dominance as a superior life form.
Brightburn is a very cruel film, it is not a typical horror film, many of these people do not deserve what they get and it actually makes it quite hard to watch. The opening also completely removes any mystery from the film, kind of obvious what Brandon is if you’ve seen the trailer but a slow burn reveal might have been a nice alternative to being told in the opening three minutes.
The third act and ending are definitely not as strong as the first and second act but could it have gone any other way? Probably not.
So if you’re up for the anti-superman show starting blood, jump scares and a whole lot of creepy 12 year old then Brightburn is for you. Not great, not bad, could have been better executed is all.
