Although visually spectacular, Alita: Battle Angel is a mess of a film. The story does not have enough weight or intrigue to carry its lofty premise and performances are, for the most part, flat and uninspired even from fantastic actors such as Christoph Waltz and Mahershala Ali. It attempts to tackle too much too fast and ultimately results in being a set up for a franchise which I will be surprised if we ever see played out to its fullest.
It’s tough to root for a protagonist when they are so poorly developed, and even harder to sympathise with key secondary characters when they are either too stupid, or too unlikable to get behind.
Feels like it should have been a TV show, or at least put in the hands of a director who put more emphasis on these complex themes and characters.
A fun popcorn flick but offers little depth to be anything more.
