Detective Pikachu is not quite the film that the trailers made it out to be. Rather than tiptoeing the balance between rollicking adventure film and gritty noir drama like we were led to believe, it ends up being not quite either of them.
It doesn’t feel like there’s and awful lot of detective work and it doesn’t feel like there’s an awful lot of action. The Pokemon are few and far between and largely do little for the plot of the film. Most of the characters are one dimensional and a fair amount of the acting is wooden. Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu is the highlight of the film and there’s a particularly memorable action sequence in the forest that caps off the 2nd act. But beyond that Detective Pikachu is anything but memorable, I’ve already forgotten all the character names and the main villains motivations. But it still retains the charm you would expect from a Pokemon movie and the CG work on many of the creatures is absolutely fantastic.
