The Hulk property has always been something Marvel have been tentative to do solo wok on following the underwhelming The Incredible Hulk in 2008. Whilst Mark Ruffalo’s interpretation of the character has been met with a positive reception since his introduction in 2012’s Avengers Assemble, he has often been a supporting character rather than given the spotlight for any length of time. But with the launch of Disney+, marvel now have an opportunity to explore more of the Hulk canon in a less risky and more niche way. So, where better to start than a legal comedy about She-Hulk?
Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is an attorney in her thirties who is struggling with the day-to-day drama of being a woman. She is overlooked for promotions, constantly pestered about her dating life, and fears for her life every time she leaves the house in case she is attacked by a group of random men. That is until she gets a whole new set of problems when she becomes contaminated with Bruce Banner’s (Mark Ruffalo’s) blood, transforming her into She-Hulk. Whilst it may seem that becoming a superhero might be great for most people, for Jennifer, it only makes her already difficult life more complicated.

It's kind of sad that a show that is primarily centred about bringing women’s issues to the forefront of the MCU and tackling the misogyny that the franchise has often embraced has been the subject of such vile online discourse, from men of course. But if anything, I guess it shows that Marvel’s writers have struck a nerve in that toxic manbaby fanbase and honestly, I’m totally here for it. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was a lot of fun, with each of its nine episodes filled with great characters, witty dialogue, and some awesome fourth wall breaking gags.
Jennifer is a great character who’s just so normal and down to earth. Compared to your typical Marvel main character, Jennifer really is just an everyday woman trying to continue living her normal everyday life with the added complication of having superpowers. It also opens up a brand-new side to the MCU which is superhuman law, how do you apply justice to super-powered beings to keep them in line with the rest of the public?
The show also has a number of returning faces including Bruce/Hulk, Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth), Wong (Benedict Wong), and Matt Murdoch/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) that are all used in new and interesting ways. Roth in particular gives a great performance as a rehabilitated Blonsky that has become a life coach. But it is Maslany that steals the show with her great comedic timing and fantastic emotional range.
She-Hulk’s Achilles heel is its special effects. For a while now MCU films and tv shows have been looking a little worse for wear with the special effects team clearly being stretched thin and overworked. This has never been more evident than in She-Hulk, with even our leading lady standing out like a sore thumb with some waxy looking skin and seemingly weightless hair. But the whole show suffers from bad special effects, and it does bring the quality of the entire show down with it.
She-Hulk is one of the best Phase Four projects Marvel has put its hand to, and I can’t wait to see Jennifer return in some capacity whether it be a season two, another D+ show, or even an MCU film. Whilst the special effects do let the show down significantly, the writing and performances are some of the best Marvel has offered in quite some time. I had a great time with She-Hulk, and I think this is one of the most accessible MCU shows around due to its unique take on the franchise. Two big green thumbs up.
