Where the first Happy Death Day was a surprisingly clever, self aware and funny horror that blended the likes of Groundhog Day with a teen slasher premise; Happy Death Day 2 U underperforms on almost every level. The writing isn’t as sharp, the characters are less likeable and go through very similar arcs as the first and it drops the mystery of the first film for sci-fi mumbo jumbo that’s convoluted and largely incoherent to follow. If watched in conjunction with the first film, it does provide some interesting growth for the plot, but this is really hampered by a film that doesn’t actually spend much time on finding the killer before time runs out and ultimately goes nowhere fast. For a film that’s only 100 minutes long, it could have been around 30 minutes shorter. It simply has no reason to exist and it’s setup for future instalments with the same premise is simply a waste of time and money for Blumhouse when they could be putting their energy towards new original horror films or sequels to more deserving properties.
