The fact that I have not seen any Terminator films post 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, I have not had to experience the supposed downward spiral of the series to the complete dumpster fire that was Genisys. On the other hand, it means my opinion of Terminator: Dark Fate may be slightly skewed.
Dark Fate is a soft reboot of the franchise but also a sequel to Terminator 2. Sarah Connor may have stopped Judgement Day from happening in August of 1997 but the war was always far from over. Dark Fate opens with the death of John Connor a short time after T2, it then jumps forward to modern day and Skynet does not exist. However a new kind of Terminator has appeared and is hunting down a young woman called Dani, whilst a protector from the future, Grace, has been sent to keep her safe and destroy the Terminator. Sarah Connor also shows up as a hardened Terminator hunter to help kill this new breed of machine.
To be fair to the film, Dark Fate is a pretty good action film. But when looking at it as a sequel to T2, I feel put off by how unlikeable almost all of the characters are, including Sarah Connor, and what this new AI that has replaced Skynet, named Legion, actually is and how it came to be.
The first two Terminator films did a great job a building a world that Dark Fate ultimately, for better or worse, just throws away.
Like I say, I may change my opinion once I see the other Terminator films, but Dark Fate was a little disappointing to me as I feel as though it has distanced itself too much from the previous films.
Shout out to Mackenzie Davis though, one of the best actors out there at the moment and she is great in this film.
