"Barbie has always represented the fact that a woman has choices." - Ruth Handler
Created in 1959, Barbie is one of the longest running toy lines in history, and has managed to consistently adapt with the times to remain relevant, crucially maintaining its foothold as one of the most popular toy brands in the world. Originally conceived to give girls a positive role model that they could play with, a woman who could achieve anything she wanted, the brand has becomes synonymous with feminism, and breaking misogynistic gender boundaries.
With the dawn of the new millennium, and interest in digital entertainment on the rise, Mattel made the bold decision to attempt to translate a number of their toy lines into various media forms including animated films, and the brand that would test the waters would be Barbie.
Over twenty years later and the Barbie brand has thrived from the periodic release of animated films, acting as feature length commercials for new toy lines; and has even spawned a live action film starring Margot Robbie in the leading role.
Collected here are my reviews for every Barbie animated film, as well as the live action film, categorised accordingly and listed in release order.
